When Rebekah Brooks was interrogated by Robert Jay QC during the Leveson Inquiry, she was unable to stop her sheer arrogance breaking through her vain attempt to come across as an innocent ‘I was only doing what our readers wanted’ defence. She even had the gall to dress like Mary Poppins, in order to try to portray herself as a mumsy innocent.
Despite the lives she’s destroyed and the reactionary, sexist, racist and homophobic agenda she pursued as editor of the Sun & News of the World and Chief Executive of News International, she expressed a view that it was all in the ‘public interest’ and what her readers wanted to read. What a horrible individual she is.
Mary Poppins
Throughout her evidence she showed no remorse for the consequences of her actions. Her conceited recklessness and haughtiness was highlighted when she was questioned about the fact she published names & photos of paedophiles, which led to a number of vigilantly attacks, including an attack on an innocent paediatrician. She refused to accept that her actions were in any way wrong, instead saying that it was her attempt to get the law changed in relation to sex offenders.
Robert Jay QC stated “Is it not evidently inflammatory to publish in the News of the World the names and photographs of known sex offenders with the foreseeable consequence that there might be physical violence”? (Brooks response – “No”)
“It might not have been your motive but it was the natural and probable consequence of your actions, wasn’t it”? (Brooks response – “No”)
“If it wasn’t, it means you banished from your mind that which would be patently obvious to anyone else, which ought to have been obvious to an Editor exercising your position, role and power”.
Most incredible, was when she complained about press intrusion into her own life. For the CEO of a corporation which has devoted itself to the pornification of the mainstream for the past 20 years to complain about sexism, beggars belief beyond words! Does she not see the irony?!
When questioned about whom the source of the story, which revealed that Gordon Brown’s son had cystic fibrosis, she point blank refused to cooperate, except to say that Gordon Brown agreed to the story being published (He has since issued a statement refuting this).
Of course, in other areas of her questioning, she suffered from the now common News International Executive Selective Amnesia – “I don’t know... I can’t remember... I don’t recall...”. She couldn’t even remember if David Cameron was at her 40th Birthday party!
Frighteningly, throughout her evidence, Brooks came across as if she actually and genuinely believed what she was saying. Surely this is clear evidence of a mental health problem, no?!
They have systematically, and without any moral compass, used xenophobic, racist, sexist and homophobic rhetoric, causing untold damage to countless people in the UK and abroad.
The net is now finally closing in on them. They’ve nowhere to hide. They must all be stopped. They must all be brought to justice. That is what the public demands. That is what is in the public interest. That is what we are all looking forward to seeing.
Robert Jay QC summarised Brooks ‘performance’ when he said to her “It’s been a recurring theme in the questioning over the course of the day that I put to you a proposition which might seem obvious, as a matter of common sense, and you reject it each time”.
What is obvious to the Defend Tommy Sheridan Campaign, to Tommy & his family, his friends and his supporters, is that Brooks, Coulson, Bird, and their cronies are responsible for the most abhorrent and illegal intrusions into people’s private lives, on an industrial scale.
Amongst the answers he did give, were that he confirmed that when he was asked by David Cameron about Clive Goodman, he said "I said to him I knew nothing in terms of what they did". Incredibly he went on to say that he "...had no interest in people's private lives"!
He also confirmed that he did not have sufficient security clearance, yet had unsupervised access to top secret materials and attended meetings of the Security Council. He also received substantial monies from the News of the World when he worked at No 10, which included the time he gave evidence at the High Court in Glasgow at Tommy’s Perjury Trial. He also has £40,000 of News International shares.
We are convinced that his evidence at the High Court in Glasgow and at the Leveson Inquiry will be found to be lies and that he will be brought to justice. We await that day with relish!
Andy Coulson’s evidence at the Leveson Inquiry was riddled with “I can’t remember”, “I don’t recall”, “I’m don’t know” and “Not to my knowledge”!
His questioning was restricted due to his arrest by officers of Operation Weeting, however references to phone hacking at the News of the World.
He went on to say: "The former member of the Scottish Parliament, Tommy Sheridan, lost his liberty on a majority verdict of a jury not in full possession of the facts.
"He received a three year prison sentence - I believe the judgement is unsound.
"If Rupert Murdoch really is sorry then he will order an urgent review of the information his company provided to the jury in the Sheridan case."
Mr Watson added: "Now that we know that the former First Minister of Scotland (Jack McConnell) was also a target of hacking, I am writing to Alex Salmond recommending that he set up an inquiry by the Scottish Parliament into how and why MSPs were targeted".
Reacting to the culture committee's report, Tommy said it was clear that his perjury conviction was unsafe as it was based on "evidence that was untrue and evidence that was not complete".
"News International failed to deliver the information which they were asked to deliver to a court of law in Glasgow".
Tommy has been briefed regularly by Strathclyde Police on Operation Rubicon, which is investigating allegations of phone hacking, breach of data protection and perjury.
He said: "There will be a report in future and there may even be court cases in the future. This report has found the Murdochs unfit to run a fish and chip shop never mind run a big media organisation."
On his conviction, Tommy added: "A jury took a very narrow decision, by eight votes to six, to find me guilty of a crime that I know I'm not guilty of.
"They were misinformed. They were misled. I think they were deliberately misled. That may be for a jury in the future to decide. The fact is the conviction against me is unsafe."
At the press conference of the Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee, where the Committee published their Report into phone hacking by News Corp, Tom Watson MP referred to Tommy’s conviction for perjury.
Speaking after the publication of the report Mr Watson, a member of the select committee, said matters which had emerged during the committee's investigation had cast doubt on Tommy's conviction.
Tom Watson MP, a member of the Committee, said "more than any individual alive", Murdoch was to blame for phone hacking, and it was right to "raise the bar" of the report and make that clear.
The Report concluded that News Corp as a whole was guilty of "huge failings of corporate governance" and, throughout, its instinct had been "to cover up rather than seek out wrongdoing and discipline the perpetrators".
The Committee said: "Corporately, the News of the World and News International misled the committee about the true nature and extent of the internal investigations they professed to have carried out in relation to phone hacking; by making statements they would have known were not fully truthful; and by failing to disclose documents which would have helped expose the truth."
The Committee also criticised three former News International executives - one-time executive chairman Les Hinton, former News of the World editor Colin Myler and former legal manager Tom Crone - accusing them of giving misleading evidence.
Rupert Murdoch "is not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international company", MPs have said.
The Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee questioned journalists and bosses at the now-closed News of the World, as well as police and lawyers for hacking victims.
Its report concluded that Murdoch exhibited "wilful blindness" to what was going on in News Corporation.
The report was much more damning than had been anticipated and directly questioned the integrity and honesty of Rupert Murdoch.
Gordon Dangerfield, Tommy's solicitor has lodged has lodged a formal complaint to the Editorial Standards Committee of the BBC Trust over the corporation's reporting of aspects of the Perjury trial in the High Court in Glasgow in 2010.
The complaint documents a series of claimed breaches of the corporation's editorial guidelines contained in a documentary, "The Rise and Lies of Tommy Sheridan" broadcast on 23rd December 2010, the evening of Tommy's conviction, and segments of a Reporting Scotland news programme, broadcast on 26th January 2011, when Tommy was sentenced.
The complaints centre around allegations of selective editing, impartiality and inaccuracy, and the broadcast of a police interview with Gail Sheridan, against whom charges were dropped.
The broadcasting regulator OFCOM has previously rejected complaints lodged by the Sheridan family about the documentary. In December 2011 the BBC agreed to review the basis of the Sheridan family's complaints in respect of the two programmes.
In his written submisison on behalf of the Sheridans, Dangerfield says the "tabloid hysteria" surrounding the case caused the BBC to "miss almost entirely the real and important story of the Sheridan case, a story which is a major part of the one now emerging daily at the Leveson Inquiry, at the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, in the arrests by the police of News International staff, and of course in the work of journalists less apparently besotted than those of BBC Scotland by tales of kinky three-in-a-bed sex, and thus less susceptible to becoming part of the Murdoch tabloid agenda."
Tommy has finally returned home after serving one year in prison following his conviction for perjury at the High Court in Glasgow in December 2010.
His friends and supporters are delighted that he has finally returned home to his wife & daughter, as well as the rest of his family. Now he can begin to rebuild his life, with the help of his many friends & supporters.
His year spent in prison has been momentous: The Arab Spring; the continued Economic Crisis; the Trade Union struggle against the UK ConDem Government, which saw on 30th November the biggest coordinated strikes of workers since 1926; the election of a majority SNP Government in Holyrood; the progress of an Independence Referendum; the downfall of Muammar Gaddafi; the demise of the News of the World and the consequent Police investigations and Government Inquiries into phone hacking; are just a few of the major events that have taken place in that time.
Most significantly for Tommy and the Campaign is ‘Operation Rubicon’, initiated by Strathclyde Police as a consequence of a dossier presented to them by Tommy’s Lawyer, Aamer Anwar, regarding concerns over evidence given by Andy Coulson and others at the perjury trial in 2010.
There was widespread condemnation of an initial condition placed on Tommy’s release by the Scottish Prison Service, specifically their refusal to allow him to speak in public until his tag is removed in 6 months time. As a consequence of the public outcry and pending legal action, the Scottish Prison Service relented at the last minute.
Tommy is now free to play a full part in fighting the UK ConDem Government over the job losses, wage reductions and pension thefts suffered by millions of ordinary working people, as a consequence of their austerity drive, due to the mess caused by the rich and powerful in the City of London and their friends in the parliamentary corridors of power.
Ordinary people didn’t cause the economic disaster facing the western world, but they are being forced to pay for it. Tommy’s leadership and influence will be invaluable as part of the millions of people who are resisting this injustice.
He will continue to be a source of inspiration to millions, and will once again be a political force to be reckoned with.
We will all continue to campaign to clear his name and we will not rest until the real liars are exposed and brought to justice.
